Fourth season elk hunt - The fourth season elk hunt was cold and the ground was white which is typical for this time of year. We went out the first evening and went up to cow creek and were glassing for elk at the top of the dug way. We didn’t see any elk so we started down the dug way. We got to the stand and not very long after we were sitting there we spotted some elk. The elk were in west cow creek on this fourth season elk hunt so we hiked back to the vehicle and drove up the road and walked in on fern pond. We snuck into fern pond and were glassing several elk and could hear some that we couldn’t get eyes on. There were four different groups and probably around 40-50 head. All the shots were over 400 yards and across the drainage. We spotted about nine cows that were side hilling and we figured they might come closer for us to get a shot. Shooting light was coming to an end so we figured we’d sneak out of there while we still had some light and we’d come back in the morning and hopefully seal the deal for this fourth season elk hunt. Right when we got up and started walking we saw a cow enter the park at fern pond less than 125 yards out. It was perfect, we were able to make a one shot kill and walked right to it. We were going to have to pack the elk out due to the amount of snow on the ground. We were afraid of the cold weather freezing the elk so we de-boned it hung the bags in the tree and came back in the morning to pack it out. Proved to be a nice fourth season elk hunt.
