Colorado outfitted elk hunt - Our Colorado outfitted elk hunt - muzzleloader season was during the third week in September. We arrived and the weather was in the 70’s during the day, dropping into the 30’s at night, which seemed to be average for that time of year. We arrived in camp, unloaded our gear and I sat back and took in the beautiful scenery as the rest of the guys took off fishing for some trout. The Colorado outfitted elk hunt was a total of five days; we were seeing elk everyday, but it was very hard to pattern with unpredictable behavior. One day the bulls were going crazy like a symphony of elk bugling. The next day they were quiet as a mouse. We hunted different techniques depending upon weather and what the elk were doing. Before getting rained on, we were sitting at the watering holes and this was a great technique especially when the elk were quiet and not bugling much. Once the elk started bugling we were able to stalk and call them in more easily. The hardest day we had on this Colorado outfitted elk hunt was rainy day, with no vocal behavior from the elk. What made this so difficult was that you couldn’t sit by watering holes due to the amount of water everywhere and we couldn’t locate the elk when they weren’t bugling. Despite our challenges during this Colorado outfitted elk hunt, with unpredictable elk and changes in the weather, we were in elk everyday and were able to bring back some meat. This is a very challenging hunt especially if you are unable to hike the steep mountains in the area.
