What Bullet Should I Use for Elk?
One thing that I think hunters do not put enough time and thought into is their bullet choice when hunting elk. There are great bullets out there and for hunters not to be asking themselves, what bullet should I use for elk is ridiculous. There is the argument that some have that their gun might shoot better with a low retaining bullet. This is one area that if you are shooting an explosive bullet, then a well-placed shot can result in a wounded animal. I have seen bullets hit the shoulder and explode and not enter the vitals. In all my research a shoulder shot is a well-placed bullet. When I see a well-placed shot not enter the vitals it would make me want to ask the question, what bullet should I use for elk? There are many great bullets to use if you are reloading or buying over the counter. Make sure what ever you are using are high weight retention bullets. You might have to try out many different types to find the one that shoots the most accurate from your gun. Some great bullets that you can use are Accubonds, Partitions, Hornity inter bond, Serria game kings, barns, a frames, and many more. Some bullets to stay away from are Balistic silver tips, power points, core lock, Berger, and many more. Berger- bullets are controversial, but I have first-hand experience and would not recommend them for elk. I shot a cow elk at 200yds with a 140gr hunting vld and my bullet hit a rib while entering the vitals. While hitting the rib the entry wound was 2 inches wide by 4 inches long. I would rather not have a well-placed bullet exploding like that upon entry. There are great things about Berger bullets but I would not recommend them for hunting elk. So before you go on your next elk hunt research it and ask yourself, what bullet should I use for elk?
