Recap of Second Season Elk Hunt 2014
On our second season elk hunt we had great hunting weather but bad killing weather. Due to the hunting conditions I was extremely happy with our success. We had 6 hunters, 4 of which got elk and we also got a nice mule deer buck. To talk more about the weather it was getting into the 70's during the day but thankfully dropping into the 30's at night. Opening day of the second season elk hunt we had our hunters spread out like normal and we shot a nice bull about 10:30 that morning in Cow Creek, and nothing in the afternoon. On Tuesday morning we went for a buck run and shot a nice 4x4 mule deer. In the afternoon we shot another bull in Cow Creek around 2:00. We had another hunter have a great opportunity at some cows but of course he had a bull tag. Monday morning started out pretty slow but we ended up shooting a cow that afternoon. So far on our second season elk hunt we have shot all of our elk mid-day, generally you wouldn't think that due to the hot days but when hunting is tough it's tough for everyone. Also the hunters around us started moving around trying to find elk which was obviously good for us. Tuesday was our dead day, we never had a good opportunity at an elk. Wednesday was our last day and right off the bat we saw a nice bull but he was about 1000 yds out. We kept watching him and he was comfortable feeding and bedding down. Typically we wouldn't risk making a move on an elk where he was but since it was the last day we had to try something. We worked out a plan which would either get us a shot or move the elk closer to one of our stands. Well we failed on both accounts, but we didn't spook the bull, which gave us hope that he might work back to us this evening. Well in this case we were right and the bull peaked his head out right before dark and our hunter made a great shot on a 4 year old bull.
